The Bank of Canada held rates steady today. On the surface, that sounds like stability but, what’s happening behind the scenes tells a more complex story.

With uncertainty building around the upcoming CUSMA trade discussions in July and ongoing global tensions, the Bank signaled that short-term rate increases are still on the table.

If you look at the history of the Prime Rate, you'll notice that this has happened before...1982, 1994, and 2000. Spikes were happening during falling rate markets. The rates quickly spiked up and then they came down even faster and actually hit new lows.

No one knows if we are in one of those markets right now but it's feeling like it might be more in the likelihood of a quick increase and a quick fall again.
